Trivia: The donut is older than the dinosaur. Well, not quite, but archaeologists unearth fossilized bits of things that look like donuts in prehistoric Native American settlements.
Donut Recipe for Baked Yeast Donuts
Makes 3 dozen
1 1/2 cup scalded milk
1/3 cup shortening
1/4 cup sugar
2 tsp salt
2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1 cup all bran cereal
1/4 cup lukewarm water
2 eggs, slightly beaten
4 1/4 cups flour, sifted
2 tbsp melted butter or margarine
2 packages granular yeast
Combine the hot milk and the shortening. Mix in the sugar, salt spices and bran. Cool until it is lukewarm.
Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm water. Add the yeast to the bran mixture, along with the eggs. Stir well. Add flour and mix until combined.
Cover your donut recipe and allow it to sit for about two hours or until it is twice the bulk.
Turn it onto a board that you have floured well. It will be soft and sticky, but shape it into a ball as best you can. Roll it out to 1//2 " thickness, being careful not to stretch it.
Flour a 3 inch Donut Cutter and place the donuts two inches apart on greased baking sheets. Brush melted butter on the donuts. Rise until doubled. This usually takes about an hour.
Preheat the oven to 425 ° F and bake for ten or twelve minutes. After cooling, ice this donut recipe with a thin icing made by mixing icing sugar and milk.

Donut Recipe for Cake Donuts with Chocolate Glaze
1/2 tsp nutmeg
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup oil
1/2 cup milk
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
2 3/4 cup unsifted flour
4 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
Combine eggs, nutmeg, sugar and oil. Beat this for two or three minutes, then stir in the vanilla and milk. Using a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Add it to the first ingredients. Beat until the batter is well blended. Scrape the sides of the bowl. Cover this donut recipe mixture and refrigerate for at least two hours.
Using a deep fryer or a large pot, heat two inches of cooking oil to 375°:. Use a candy & deep fry thermometer to be sure you have the right temperature.
Flour a board and roll out one half of the dough until it is half an inch thick. Keep the remaining half of the dough in the fridge while you do this.
Use a 2.5 inch Doughnut Cutterand cut out three donuts at a time. Place them into the hot fat. When the bottom turns gold, turn each donut over to cook both sides. Move them to paper towels to drain. Continue shaping and frying until the second half of the donut recipe is used up.
Take the scraps and fry them also. You can roll and shape them if you have enough dough, or just fry them as they are.
Allow this donut recipe to cool completely on cake racks.
Dip the tops in a chocolate glaze.
1 cup icing sugar
2 tbsp cocoa
1 tsp vanilla
3 tbsp boiling water, approximately.
Combine all ingredients in a bowl until smooth.
If you end up with any leftover, stale donuts, you can cut the up and use them in bread pudding. Bread pudding made from a donut recipe is delicious.
